Founded in Louisville in 1996, Mission Data has expanded over the years with a second office in Washington, DC, and additional team members located across the country. While Louisville is 776 miles from New York City and more than 2,300 miles from San Francisco—two cities leading tech job growth in the U.S.—the tech scene here is building momentum, with no signs of slowing down.
The first quarter of 2017 has come to a close, and a lot of tech trends and predictions made at the beginning of the year are already being realized. Emerging technologies are maturing with more defined use cases and strategic direction. In this post, we focus on the development of artificial intelligence (AI), looking at how automation technologies have begun to unfold in the business world.
We recently tested Rekognition’s image detection capabilities with photos from a cell phone camera, so next we decided to automate the process with photos from a Raspberry Pi camera module. We used a motion sensor we had set up in one of our previous projects to begin work on our desired motion-activated identity verification system. With that in mind, we set the Raspberry Pi and camera up on a desk in one of our office rooms, pointed it at the door, and got to work.
Some apps, like Facebook, YouTube, and Pinterest, can lead to a bottomless pit of mindless browsing. A quick 10-minute scroll can turn into hours of lost productivity. Thankfully, there are legitimate tools out there for getting back on track and back to work.
It’s been a little over a week since the Mission Data team returned from SXSW, the annual mecca for innovators in tech, music, and film. We met with clients and partners, squeezed into capacity-crowd discussions, and drank spicy cocktails.

This was my first trip to the vaunted SXSW festival in Austin and my first impression was, omg, there are a ton of people here! And everyone spends most of their day in some sort of line. A line for the taxi stand, a line for the sessions, a line for drinks, for food, well, you get the idea. As someone who doesn’t like lines, this was frustrating at first but then you kind of get used to it.
Our CEO, Stu Gavurin, and VP of research and development, Carson McDonald, recently traveled to Florida with one of our clients, EagleWatchGolf, to enhance a mobile solution with beacon technology. The EagleWatchGolf app by Mission Data allows users to compete for hole-in-one jackpots at select holes in participating golf courses.
In a slight change of pace from our recent explorations of Internet of Things platforms, we started digging into Amazon’s recently announced Rekognition service. Rekognition is a powerful image processing service capable of detecting faces, people, objects, and subtle photo elements such as scene and sentiment.
